The idea, in plain English

Start here.

Google Search Console helps an authorized site owner understand how Google discovers, indexes and serves the site, and how it performs in Google Search. Start with the appropriate property and report, record the date range and filters, and interpret the metric in that context. Search clicks are not website sessions or sales, an average position is not a fixed rank, and a report observation is a starting point for investigation rather than proof of its cause.

A page’s impressions rise while its clicks stay unchanged. That is a useful observation, but ‘the title is bad’ is only one possible explanation. The page may be appearing for a different mix of queries, devices or countries. Learn to describe the report first, narrow the question and inspect the page before choosing a change.

Property

The site scope selected in Search Console. Check that it covers the URLs you intend to investigate.

Impression

A counted appearance in Search results under the relevant report’s rules; it is not a website visit.

CTR

Click-through rate: clicks divided by impressions for the selected report scope.

Dimension

The way report rows are grouped, such as query, page, country, device or date.

Choose the property and the report for the question

Use an account with appropriate access to the intended site property. Search Console provides site information and tools that can affect its Search presence, so ownership verification and permissions matter. You can learn with the fictional data below without changing a real account or submitting anything.

Choose the report by the job. Performance helps investigate Search appearances and clicks. Page indexing gives a broader view of indexing states. URL Inspection helps investigate a particular URL and distinguishes indexed information from a live check. A sitemap can support discovery and monitoring; submitting one does not guarantee indexing. An excluded page is not automatically a problem if its exclusion matches the site’s intended setup.

Read the metrics with their scope attached

In the Search results Performance report, clicks count clicks from the relevant Search results and impressions count appearances under the report’s rules. CTR is clicks divided by impressions. Average position concerns the topmost result for the relevant site or grouping; it is an average across the selected observations, not a promise that everyone sees one fixed ranking.

Record the date range, search type, selected metrics, filters and grouping. Query rows answer a different question from page rows. Search results can vary with time, place, device and recent history, so repeating a query in your own browser may not reproduce a report row. Treat the newest preliminary data as provisional. Also note that unavailable values shown as a dash or tilde can become zeros in exports; preserve their original meaning rather than treating every exported zero as a measured absence.

MAKE THE CONNECTION

The denominator changed. The clicks did not.

Two original report windows compare a 500 impression ruler and a 1,000 impression ruler with the same 20 click marker. The attached calculations show 4 percent and 2 percent CTR without implying a causal result.
Original fictional report windows: 20/500 = 4% versus 20/1,000 = 2%. Same defined scope, two illustrative periods. No live Search Console account, causal result or website-customer count is shown.

Compare like with like and investigate the difference

Use comparable periods and keep relevant filters consistent. A change in the mix of devices, countries, pages or queries can alter an overall rate. Start with the affected page or group, then inspect the dimensions that help test your explanation. A lower CTR is not automatically a title failure, and more impressions do not establish more customers.

Chart and table totals can differ because the grouping and aggregation differ. Do not add page rows and expect them always to reproduce a property-level total. If a page seems absent, inspect its intended indexing state and the appropriate URL evidence rather than diagnosing from one empty performance row. Separate what the report shows, your possible explanations and the next check.

Keep AI reporting and website outcomes distinct

As documented for availability from August 31, 2026, Google provides a Generative AI performance report for Search impressions associated with AI Overviews and AI Mode. These data are also included in the overall Web Search view; they are not an additional total to add to it. The dedicated report’s scope and available metrics should guide the question. Do not invent a separate click, conversion or revenue measure from its impression data.

The report may be unavailable when there are not enough impressions, and newest figures can be preliminary. Absence of the report is not proof of zero AI exposure. For visits and later actions, use the appropriate website analytics or business records while retaining their different definitions and coverage. Close your review with a specific next check, owner and recorded filters so someone else can understand what you concluded.

SEE IT IN PRACTICE

More appearances, unchanged clicks

Original fictional Search results view with the same defined page/filter scope in two comparable periods. Period A has 500 impressions and 20 clicks: 20 ÷ 500 = 4% CTR. Period B has 1,000 impressions and 20 clicks: 20 ÷ 1,000 = 2% CTR. Impressions doubled, clicks did not change and CTR fell. This does not identify the cause or show bookings.

Put it into practice

Write a Search Console observation

Use the two fictional periods. A teammate wants to rewrite every title immediately and add Generative AI impressions to overall Web impressions as an extra reach total.

  1. Record the property/page scope, period, search type, filters and grouping you would need.
  2. State the three supported changes without a causal claim.
  3. Choose one useful dimension to investigate and explain why.
  4. Explain why adding the AI impression count to the overall Web total would be wrong.
  5. Write a bounded next check and name what these reports do not establish.

Keep your working notes in your own document. This page saves only your completion check, not your answers or customer data.

Check your understanding

Make the call.

Choose an answer for each question. Then compare the reasoning.

1. What does average position represent?
2. Impressions rise 500 → 1,000 and clicks remain 20. What is supported?
3. Should dedicated Generative AI Search impressions be added to overall Web impressions?
Take it with you

You have a useful next step.

  • Select the right property/report and record the filters.
  • Interpret metrics, aggregation and preliminary or unavailable data carefully.
  • Investigate the difference before attributing a cause or business result.

Completion is your own learning record. Quiz scores and practice checks are saved separately, on this browser.
