3Questions to
check your thinking

The idea, in plain English

Start here.

Break an AI-assisted draft into specific claims and choose a check suited to each one. Recompute arithmetic, compare quotations with the original, and trace current facts to an appropriate source with the right scope. Keep supported statements, interpretations and unresolved gaps distinct. Another fluent answer or a confidence label is not independent verification.

A draft says a delivery contains 30 notebooks, will arrive Saturday and uses recycled paper. Those look like one smooth sentence, but they are three different claims. The inventory, delivery record and exact product specification may answer different parts. One convincing source cannot fill every gap.

Claim inventory

A list of the specific statements you intend to use, kept close to their original wording and supporting material.

Source fit

Whether a source is appropriate for the particular claim, including the subject, version, date and relevant conditions.

Independent check

Evidence or a calculation that does not merely repeat the same unsupported answer or underlying report.

Evidence gap

Information the current review has not established. Record it instead of turning a plausible guess into a fact.

Extract the claims and choose the check

List the statements that matter to the intended use. Include names, quantities, dates, quotations, product characteristics and commitments. The assistant can help prepare this list, but inspect it yourself so a missing claim does not disappear from the review. Keep recommendations and interpretations labeled as such; they can depend on factual assumptions that also need checking.

Choose the type of evidence before searching. An inventory record can establish how many items are recorded. A calculation can verify the total from supplied counts. A current delivery record can establish the relevant shipment status. A product specification needs to match the actual item. This makes the review a set of concrete questions rather than a search for general agreement.

Trace the statement to an appropriate original

Open the actual source, not only a search preview or the assistant’s description. Check its identity and the passage that supports the claim. Then ask whether the date, product, location, sample or version fits the use. A source about a different notebook cannot establish this notebook’s material just because both belong to the same brand.

Follow references to the original evidence where practical. Several articles repeating one claim do not provide several independent observations. If a source is inaccessible, record that limit and seek appropriate accessible evidence. Not finding it in a quick search does not establish that it was fabricated or that the claim is false.

MAKE THE CONNECTION

The evidence has to fit the claim.

A source board separates a recomputed 24-notebook inventory claim, an unresolved delivery-date claim and a material claim attached to the wrong product model. Each has a distinct evidence status.
Original fictional review board: inventory arithmetic establishes 24 notebooks; delivery remains unknown; a different-model sheet does not verify material. This is not a measured AI error rate or a real product assessment.

Recompute numbers and preserve exact meaning

Use a calculator or another suitable inspectable method for arithmetic. In the fictional inventory below, two cartons of twelve notebooks contain 24 notebooks, not 30. Keep the unit and scope with the result: notebooks in the supplied record, not all stock in the business. If the calculation uses an estimate, label the output as dependent on that estimate.

For a quotation, inspect the original wording and enough surrounding context to preserve its meaning. For a summary, check both additions and omissions: a dropped exception can change the conclusion even when every remaining sentence is true. A source supporting one sentence does not automatically support an entire paragraph. Keep source location and relevant conditions available for the reviewer.

Repair the draft and retain the unresolved work

Rewrite the supported part, remove unsupported certainty and assign the missing question to an appropriate source or owner. A useful final result can include a clearly stated gap. Do not replace an invented delivery date with another guess merely because the second one sounds more cautious.

An assistant can organize claims, suggest where to look and flag possible inconsistencies. Its own confidence rating or a second model’s agreement still needs external checking. OpenAI’s guidance recommends verifying important numbers, names, dates, quotations and claims against the correct material. Keep a short review record showing what was checked, the resulting wording and what remains open so the next person does not assume the whole draft was verified.

SEE IT IN PRACTICE

Three claims, three evidence decisions

Original fictional brief: inventory lists 2 cartons with 12 notebooks each. No delivery date is supplied. The attached material sheet describes a different notebook model. These are practice records, not a real shipment or product claim.

Put it into practice

Create a small claim-review record

Review the fictional 30-notebook/Saturday/recycled-paper draft using only the supplied brief. No live product research or real delivery lookup is required.

  1. Separate the three claims and retain their original wording.
  2. Recompute the inventory total with units.
  3. Explain why the different-model sheet cannot verify the material claim.
  4. Write a supported replacement for the quantity sentence and mark the other two questions open.
  5. Name the source and detail needed to resolve each open question in a real workflow.

Keep your working notes in your own document. This page saves only your completion check, not your answers or customer data.

Check your understanding

Make the call.

Choose an answer for each question. Then compare the reasoning.

1. What does the supplied inventory establish?
2. A specification concerns another notebook model. What can it establish here?
3. A source cannot be inspected. What is the honest review note?
Take it with you

You have a useful next step.

  • Separate claims before checking them.
  • Match the evidence type, subject and scope to each claim.
  • Repair the wording and keep unresolved work explicit.

Completion is your own learning record. Quiz scores and practice checks are saved separately, on this browser.
